In 2019, the alternative rock icon The Maine jumpstarted a project that would later turn into the new Warped Tour. The Maine conceptualized the event and, developed the branding, and named it Sad Summer Festival. The idea was to bring bands, who would have probably been booked for Warped Tour, into its helm. But unlike Warped Tour, the Sad Summer aims to bring in all the bands you want to see. “Warped and other festivals, your two favorite bands end up playing at the same time, and you have to miss one. The idea was one stage. Let’s partner up these bands that would be doing their own headlining tours and make something bigger than the sum of its parts,” The Maine drummer Pat Kirch explained.
Indeed, the Sad Summer brings in all the heavy hitters in emo, pop-punk, rock, and alternative. This 2024, the billing has Mayday Parade, The Maine, The Wonder Years, and We The Kings as the main performers.
