The folk rock movement came into prominence in the '60s, a result of rock's evolution during those times. Since then, many artists have dedicated their craft to this genre fusion. Among the most effective in bringing out the best of both folk and rock in their music is The Avett Brothers. Scott and Sett Avett hold the band's helm, with Bob Crawford, Joe Kwon, and Mike Marsh completing it. With all of these talented musicians together, their music has become a masterclass in what current folk-rock is like.
Rock was the genre the brothers fell in love with first. As adolescents, they both participated in a band called Nemo, which disbanded as the 2000s came. The short stint was their training ground for doing their musical project. By 2002, they came out with a debut called "Country Was." This album intentionally tested the waters, mixing folk, bluegrass, and rock. Of course, they were not the first group to do so, but they did it with a new formula - orient their music to pop relevance. They did this in the following albums that they released. It finally paid off when "Emotionalism" impressed listeners and critics. This album reared their 2009 album release "I and Love and You."
"I and Love and You" became their mainstream breakout. The success of this record brought them to the top 20 of the Billboard 200, peaking at the 16th spot. Paste named the album Best of the Year. "For their artistic breakthrough, these North Carolina howlers polished their scruffy Americana sound until it gleamed. The result: an overpowering acoustic album brimming with sadness and soul," wrote the reviewers for the magazine.
More than ten years after the release of this album, the influence is still in effect. The band won the Lifetime Achievement Award for Performance during the 2023 Americana Music Honors & Awards.
In celebration of their music, they continue to tour. They will commence on April 19 at the Highmark Stadium and wrap on August 24 at the Megacorp Pavilion.
They will be joined by Sammy Rae & The Friends at the Jacobs Pavilion at Nautica on August 23. For those of you who do not know, this indie rock/alternative and jazz band has the potential to be the next big thing. They released "Chapter One" in 2023.
